Lancer pitcher Gerrit Cole signs with UCLA

Orange Lutheran pitcher Gerrit Cole has signed a national letter of intent with UCLA, the university announced yesterday. Cole, entering his third year as a member of Lancer varsity baseball squad, was named by Baseball America as the ninth-best high school baseball prospect in the nation.

As part of an exceptional Lancer pitching staff last year that included current Cal State Fullerton hurler Daniel Renken, Long Beach State-bound Brandon Maurer, and Pepperdine-bound outfielder/pitcher Aaron Gates, Cole went 3-0 last year with a 1.21 ERA. In his three years of pitching for Orange Lutheran, he has never lost a game.

"Gerrit has a power arm and is really starting to make strides as a complete pitcher," said UCLA coach John Savage. "Gerrit is a very talented right-handed pitcher who looks to make a major impact as a freshman. He has one of the best arms in the country. We really look for Gerrit to make strides as a complete pitcher this spring."

UCLA was recently ranked 12th in the nation in the CSTV Fall Top 25.
